Step off the beaten path and discover a genuine side of eastern Indonesia
This Komodo, Flores & Sumba Eco Cultural Tour is designed not only around spectacular scenery, but also around the people, traditions and natural environments that make these islands unique.
Travelling by private car, local boat and on foot, you experience different landscapes at a slower pace, from the volcanic highlands of Flores and rainforest trails to the marine environment of Komodo National Park and the open savannas of Sumba.
Along the way, the journey brings you into contact with traditional communities and local ways of life. You visit Ngada and Manggarai villages, stay overnight in the traditional Mbaru Niang houses of Wae Rebo, learn about local agricultural traditions, explore Sumbanese villages and discover the continuing importance of megalithic customs and ancestral traditions.
The journey also encourages to immerse in nature. Snorkeling in protected marine areas, walking through mountain forests, visiting natural springs and waterfalls, and observing Komodo dragons with park rangers are all opportunities to experience the ecosystems of eastern Indonesia responsibly.
Where possible, the journey uses local guides, local accommodation, community-based experiences and locally operated services, helping your travel contribute to the communities you visit.
Rather than simply collecting photographs of famous places, this is a chance to meet the people, understand the landscapes and experience the islands at a more personal level.

Your eastern Indonesia adventure begins in Bali.
After your transfer to the airport, take your domestic flight to Ende on Flores. Your local guide and driver will meet you on arrival before you begin the scenic journey into the Flores highlands.
The road from Ende to Moni is part of the experience. Instead of rushing towards the next attraction, you have time to watch Flores gradually change outside the vehicle window: forested hills, small farming communities, rice terraces, roadside markets and mountain scenery.
This is your first introduction to Flores travel beyond the usual tourist route. The island is mountainous, rural and surprisingly diverse, and the journey through the interior gives you an immediate sense of local life.
By afternoon, you reach the peaceful mountain village of Moni, surrounded by green hills and cool highland air.
Moni is the gateway to Kelimutu and the perfect place to slow down before tomorrow's early start.
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Kelimutu Eco Lodge.
An early start takes you into Kelimutu National Park. Arrive at the parking lot of Kelimutu after 1,5 hours drive. Continue by foot approximately 30 minutes to the view point of Kelimutu.
After a short walk, you reach the viewpoint above the famous three crater lakes. As the first morning light reaches the volcanic landscape, the lakes gradually reveal their different colours.
The atmosphere at Kelimutu is one of the memorable moments of any Flores island tour. Rather than simply ticking off a viewpoint, take time to watch the changing light, the surrounding forest and the distant mountain landscape.
Return to Moni for breakfast before continuing towards Bajawa.
Later, stop at the So'a Hot Springs, where naturally warm mineral water provides a welcome break after the early morning.
The afternoon brings one of the cultural highlights of the Flores journey: Bena Traditional Village.
The village is associated with the Ngada people and is known for its traditional houses, ancestral structures and megalithic stones. Here, your guide can help explain the relationship between the village, family groups, ancestors and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
By late afternoon, continue to Bajawa, a cool mountain town surrounded by volcanic hills.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Roo Hotel, Bajawa
Today the Flores road journey continues west towards Ruteng.
Your first stop is Aimere, an area known for its traditional palm-sap production and local arak-making culture.
From the lowlands, the road climbs again through green mountain country before reaching Lake Ranamese.
Hidden among montane forest, this peaceful crater lake offers a completely different atmosphere from the coastal landscapes you will encounter later in the trip. Take a walk, breathe the cool mountain air and enjoy the quiet surroundings.
Continue to Ruteng, situated in the heart of the Manggarai highlands.
This part of the journey is especially rewarding for travelers who enjoy seeing the landscape change slowly rather than simply flying between destinations.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Ara Garden Inn Hotel, Ruteng
After breakfast, leave Ruteng and head towards the extraordinary Lingko rice fields.
Seen from above, the fields form a distinctive radial pattern resembling a spider web. This traditional agricultural landscape is closely associated with Manggarai culture and is one of the most recognisable cultural landscapes of Flores.
From here, continue towards Denge, the starting point for the trek to Wae Rebo.
The approximately 2½–3-hour trek takes you through rainforest and mountain scenery. This is not simply a transfer to a village: the walk is an important part of the experience.
As you finally reach Wae Rebo, the traditional Mbaru Niang houses appear among the surrounding mountains.
Spend the evening in the village, meet local residents and experience a slower side of Flores travel away from the main roads.
Wae Rebo is one of the defining experiences of this Flores adventure tour.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Traditional Mbaru Niang House in Wae Rebo
Wake early and experience Wae Rebo while the mountain air is still cool and mist may linger around the traditional houses.
After breakfast, say goodbye to the village and begin the trek back to Denge.
Your Flores journey then continues towards Cunca Wulang Canyon, a beautiful natural area with rock formations, waterfalls and clear pools. If conditions are suitable, there is time for a refreshing swim.
Later, continue west towards Labuan Bajo.
The atmosphere changes as you reach this coastal town, the gateway to Komodo National Park and the starting point for the next stage of your island adventure.
Tonight is a chance to rest before boarding your private liveaboard.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Sylvia Resort Komodo, Labuan Bajo
After breakfast, board your private boat and begin your Komodo National Park adventure.
Your first island stop is Kelor, where a short uphill walk opens up beautiful views across the surrounding islands.
Continue to Manjarite, a favourite location for swimming and snorkeling. The clear water and coral-rich environment provide your first introduction to the underwater side of the Komodo Islands.
In the afternoon, sail towards Rinca Island.
Together with your park ranger, walk through the island's dry forest and savanna landscape in search of Komodo dragons. Rinca is an important Komodo habitat, and sightings can never be guaranteed because these are wild animals living within a protected ecosystem.
You may also encounter deer, wild boar, monkeys and birdlife along the trail.
As daylight fades, continue to Kalong Island.
At sunset, thousands of flying foxes may leave their mangrove roosts and cross the evening sky. Watching the silhouettes move above the sea is one of those simple moments that makes a Komodo liveaboard journey so memorable.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Private Liveaboard Boat
Today is one of the major highlights of your Komodo adventure.
Start early for Padar Island.
The climb to the viewpoint is short but steep in places. From above, the landscape opens into a dramatic composition of dry hills, curved beaches, bays and blue sea.
After descending, continue by boat towards Pink Beach.
The beach's distinctive pink colour comes from the mixture of light sand and reddish coral material. The surrounding waters are also part of the marine ecosystem of Komodo National Park, making this a beautiful place for snorkeling when conditions allow.
After lunch, continue to Komodo Island.
A park ranger accompanies you during the island walk as you explore the natural habitat of the Komodo dragon. The national park protects not only the dragons but also a remarkable combination of savanna, forest, coastline and marine ecosystems.
Later, sail towards Manta Point.
Enter the water for a chance to encounter manta rays in their natural environment. Sightings depend entirely on sea conditions and wildlife behaviour, but the possibility of swimming above these enormous rays is one of the most exciting experiences of a Komodo trip.
Continue towards Kanawa Island for the night.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Private Liveaboard Boat
Wake aboard the boat and enjoy one final opportunity for swimming or snorkeling around Kanawa Island, depending on weather, sea conditions and your flight schedule.
Return to Labuan Bajo and transfer to the airport for your flight to Sumba.
This flight marks a dramatic change in scenery.
You leave behind the dry islands and turquoise waters of the Komodo Archipelago and arrive on an island famous for wide savannas, traditional villages, megalithic tombs, horses and powerful cultural traditions.
WELCOME TO SUMBA
Sumba has a character of its own.
Its landscape is open and spacious, with long stretches of grassland, limestone hills and dramatic coastlines. Traditional houses and ancestral tombs remain an important part of village life, giving this part of Indonesia a cultural atmosphere very different from Bali or even neighbouring Flores.
After arriving, meet your Sumba guide and transfer to your hotel.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mario Hotel, Tambolaka
Your Sumba tour begins with one of West Sumba's most impressive cultural landscapes.
Visit Ratenggaro Traditional Village, known for its tall peaked houses and megalithic burial sites. The village sits close to the coast, creating a remarkable meeting point between Sumbanese architecture, ancestral traditions and the sea.
Continue to Mandorak Beach, a small and secluded coastal cove surrounded by dramatic cliffs.
Later, visit Waikuri Lagoon, a calm natural lagoon with clear turquoise water. Depending on local conditions, there is time to swim and relax.
This is Sumba at its most peaceful: remote coastline, open landscapes and little sense of the busy resort world found elsewhere in Indonesia.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Mario Hotel, Tambolaka
Today you travel deeper into the countryside of West Sumba.
Begin at Waikelo Sawah, where water, rice fields and tropical vegetation create a refreshing contrast to the drier landscapes of Sumba.
Continue to Wee Kacura Waterfall, a quieter natural spot where clear water collects in pools surrounded by greenery.
The journey then continues towards Watubela, where unusual coastal rock formations create a dramatic setting above the Indian Ocean.
Later, reach Kerewei Beach.
With its long sandy shoreline and relatively quiet atmosphere, this is a good place to slow down after several days of sightseeing and road travel.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Tentram Guest House, Waikabubak
Today you experience another side of Sumba adventure travel.
In the morning, enjoy a leisurely horse ride through the Sumbanese countryside, passing traditional settlements, grasslands and open landscapes.
Horses are deeply associated with Sumba's culture and rural life, so this experience offers more than simply a recreational activity: it provides another perspective on the island's landscape and traditions.
Continue towards Lapopu Waterfall, one of Sumba's best-known waterfalls, where water drops through a lush forested landscape.
In the late afternoon, arrive at Wairinding Hills.
The rounded hills stretch across the horizon like waves of grass. During the rainy season, they can appear bright green; in the dry season, the landscape takes on its famous golden-brown colour. Sunset is particularly beautiful here.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Padadita Hotel / Myze Hotel, Waingapu
Today combines Sumba's traditional culture with some of its most striking natural scenery.
Begin at Prai Tangga Traditional Village, where you can learn more about Sumbanese houses, customs and everyday village life.
Continue towards Tanggedu Canyon.
Often described as the "Grand Canyon of Sumba", Tanggedu is characterised by limestone formations, clear blue-green water and narrow rocky sections. Depending on local conditions, there may be opportunities to swim or enjoy the water.
Later, continue towards Puru Kambera Beach.
The open coastline, golden sand and turquoise sea provide a peaceful contrast to the inland landscapes.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Padadita Hotel / Myze Hotel, Waingapu
Your final full day of this Komodo Flores Sumba journey takes you through some of the most recognisable scenery of East Sumba.
Travel through the Tanarara Savannas, where the road winds through broad grasslands and rolling hills.
Continue to Rende Traditional Village, known for its megalithic tombs and long-standing cultural traditions.
Later, discover Waimarang Waterfall, where clear turquoise water forms a natural pool beneath the surrounding rocks and vegetation.
As afternoon turns towards evening, make your way to Walakiri Beach.
Wait for the tide and light to change as the small mangrove trees emerge from the shallow water. Around sunset, their silhouettes create the famous "dancing trees" effect for which Walakiri is known.
It is a fitting final scene for your Sumba adventure: open sky, shallow water, mangrove silhouettes and the last light of the day.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation: Padadita Hotel / Myze Hotel, Waingapu
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed final morning in Sumba.
Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for a final walk, some quiet moments at the beach or a last look at the island landscapes before transferring to Waingapu Airport.
Your flight takes you back to Bali, where your Komodo, Flores & Sumba adventure comes to an end.
Fourteen days earlier, the journey began with the volcanic highlands of Flores. Since then, you have travelled through traditional villages, mountain forests, crater lakes, remote beaches, Komodo dragon habitat, coral-rich waters, Sumbanese savannas and ancient cultural landscapes.
The journey ends in Bali, but the memories belong to the islands you travelled through.

What makes this itinerary different from a standard Komodo tour from Bali is the combination of three destinations that each tell a different story.
Flores brings volcanoes, mountain villages, rainforest, rice fields and cultural encounters.
Komodo National Park brings wild islands, Komodo dragons, snorkeling, manta rays, coral reefs and life aboard a private boat.
Sumba brings savannas, traditional villages, megalithic heritage, horses, waterfalls and remote beaches.
Together they create an Eastern Indonesia island journey that is much broader than a conventional beach holiday or short Komodo boat trip.
This is a private Komodo Flores Sumba tour for travelers who want to experience the road as well as the destination — the villages between the highlights, the changing landscapes outside the vehicle window, the early-morning mountain air, the quiet moments on the boat and the conversations that happen along the way.
